Construir el Futuro 2026

Solutions to the climate crisis are no longer hypotheses: they are contested tools with immediate political, economic and social potential. The second edition of Construir el futuro (Building the Future) explores the paths already opening up towards a prosperous future.

Introduction

Last year, when we presented the first edition of Construir el futuro, we said that although dystopian scenarios and futures were multiplying around us, we already had the materials to build a world not only of shared sufficiency but also, if properly steered, of abundance and prosperity. Twelve months on, those possibilities have only grown sharper.

While the worsening climate crisis and its increasingly frequent outbreaks continue to feed the most ominous political options, the solutions to that crisis are no longer hypotheses: they have become contested tools, with short-term political, economic and social potential that we cannot afford to let slip.

That is why this edition sets out to explore some of the many paths already opening up towards that prosperous future: from Spain’s real chances of becoming a global hub for climate, energy and industrial policies of widespread abundance, to China’s role in accelerating global decarbonisation, by way of how to build the green transition into a new European social pact and how this transition is redrawing the global order.

We believe climate politics has entered a new phase, one that goes beyond the climate. If “all politics is climate politics” used to be a slogan, today it is simply a description of reality. Whenever we talk about security, industry, defence, social policy, the digital revolution, investment cycles, geopolitics or institutional redesign, the foundations of that debate are climate and energy.

For those of us who see the present and the future through the lens of the climate crisis, this is a key moment. It is up to us to join the political conversation and make it our own, to accelerate it and steer it towards democracy, redistribution and justice. Because only a just transition will be fast, but only a fast transition will be just.
